3 simple steps to beautiful skin with the Oil Cleansing Method
What?! You want me to put OIL on my FACE! Well……YES! The oil cleansing method is receiving rave reviews from people of all ages with all skin types. This method involves never using soap. Instead, oil is massaged into the skin then rinsed/wiped away with hot water and a washcloth. In Ayurveda the Sanskrit word for oil is sneha, the same word also means love. Who wouldn’t want to clean their face with love every morning?
Once you are ready to take the plunge, throw away that soap and find the right oils for your skin: see the Oil Guide
How It works – 3 simple steps
Step 1: Massage a dime size quantity of oil into your face and neck for about a minute
Step 2: Use a washcloth and warm/hot water to wipe the oil from your face
*If you are wearing makeup oil makes an excellent makeup remover. You may need to repeat a few times to get all your makeup off.
Step 3: Optional to spray a natural toner like rosewater or green tea.
Why it works?
Using soap strips your skin of its natural oils making it hard for your skin to keep up. Some people develop dry skin and some people’s skin goes into overdrive and starts over-producing oil to keep up leading to oily skin. Dry, oily and combination skin all have a host of problems, which can lead to premature aging and wrinkles or acne. In the oil cleansing method you are essentially dissolving the excess old sebum from your skin and replenishing the skin’s cells with clean nourishing oil that provides vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Most commercial cleansers not only strip away the oils in the skin, but they are loaded with ingredients that are toxic to the cells.
The science behind the oil cleansing method for those scientific types
Ever heard of sebum? It’s the oil your skin naturally produces through a process of holocrine secretion. This is a highly technical description, which basically means that the cells produce oil then eventually burst secreting sebum along with cell debris. This is why your skin needs to be cleansed every day. If it is not cleansed it causes a buildup that can clog the pores. But sebum is necessary for healthy skin. Sebum lubricates the cells and provides a barrier to protect the skin from bacteria and environmental toxins. The oil cleansing method works because oil is a solvent for other oils. This is a basic chemistry concept.
There is an adjustment Period
When you first switch over to the oil cleansing method it may take a week or two for your skin to realize it doesn’t have to work so hard all the time. Once your skin has the opportunity it may begin to release some of the toxins from the deeper tissue layers. I urge you to try the method for at least two weeks before you expect the healthy glow everyone is raving about. You will have balanced oil production, reduction of acne, reduction of redness and irritation and reduced wrinkling.
To Wash Face With Oil Cleansing:
- In the shower or at the bathroom sink, pour about a quarter size amount of the oil blend into your hand and massage into the skin on your face (don’t wet skin first). Use smooth circular strokes and let this also be a gentle facial massage. Massage for at least a minute (two minutes is better) or until you are sure that the oil has saturated your skin. This will also remove make-up very effectively, so there is no need to remove make-up first. You can even leave the oil on the skin for up to 10 minutes to really deep clean pores.
- Place a clean washcloth under very hot tap water (or shower water) until it is completely soaked and quickly wring it out. Open it and place it over your face. This will create steam against the skin to remove the oils and any impurities in the skin. Leave the wash cloth on for about a minute, or until it cools. Repeat if needed with the other side of the washcloth and then use the corners of the washcloth to gently remove any remaining oil. There will still be a thin layer of oil on the skin and this is beneficial.
- Typically, no moisturizer is needed after the adjustment period, but if you still have dry skin, try reducing the amount of astringent oil and using a tiny bit of homemade organic lotion to moisturize skin.
Some suggestions in creating your blend of deep cleansing oil:
- Oily Skin: Try a blend of 30% Castor Oil to 70% Sunflower Seed Oil.
- Balanced Skin: Try a blend of 20% Castor Oil to 80% Sunflower Seed Oil.
- Dry Skin: Try a blend of 10% Castor Oil to 90% Sunflower Seed Oil.
Pros and Cons of Oil Cleansing
Pros:
- It’s fantastic for your skin, and works for many people to clear up acne, combat dryness, and maintain a radiant glow.
- It’s supernatural (be sure to buy cold-pressed or expeller-pressed organic oils, as well as castor oil that’s consciously extracted).
- It whisks away makeup in a flash. (It’s the only way I clean my face when I wear makeup now.)
- It doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils.
- If you use this nightly, you may not need to spring for pricey moisturizers anymore.
Cons:
- It may take a week or two for your skin to adjust to this new regimen.
- It’s more time-consuming than just washing your face with a cleanser.
- It’s a little more costly than using a cleanser, depending on the oils you choose.
- It may mean more laundry, due to the numerous washcloths you’ll go through if you do this every night.
